Ya..go with the second one.
I've beaten both SR and SR2. SR1 was a lot more challenging overall, but SR2 was a lot longer and funner overall, plus online is a bit better with SR2. I'd go with 2 instead of the original.
Get the 2nd one they improved on everything

This. IMO, SR2 is better than GTAIV, especially if you preferred the over the top humor of GTA:SA. I've beaten SR2, and there is still tons of stuff I have yet to do.
On a related note, I've SR2 over here and enjoyed its story a lot. Would it be worth picking up the original in order to better understand the backstories of what's all involved?

I would say go the first one....because the second ones story takes of straight where it left of more or less
