I'm a wood elf marksman. Good and sneaking and long distance battles. It depends on your style though. If you like battling in close quarters then maybe an Orc or imperial.i need some tips for Oblivion

You get bored of just hackin and slashin but it's quite a spectacle when you lay the law down with magic. Read the many game guides on how to quickly develop magic abilities.
It depends on your gameplay style but being a magic user, you have so many differnat spells you can use.
Like everyone else said, it depends on your play style and taste. But THIS MAY BE A SPOLIER! when you are about to leave the sewers save so when you want to restart you can customize them right there and not have to go through the lame tutorial.I prefer a battle mage. I do really good with them. just mix a warrior and mage together.
if u want your main lvl up fast and make good money make one of your main skills alchemy. then other blade then other main skill should be magic the attacking one called destruction. also armor light and heavy, athletics, Acrobatics, most of these skills will go up by them self just playing the game. the other skills u usealy have to out of your way to train them.
other thing u shoiuld know prepare to go in the game 1-2 and put 10-30hrs into it and wanting to switch the type of your person and main skills. i went in the game knowing nothing. first account played about 14hrs quit sharted new one played about 30hrs then moved on to my main one and i learned alot.
ooo tip dont kill ppl who dont attack u lol ppl in towns mainly and few out side of town as they dont spawn. guards and wild things do spawn.

Be a Dark Elf Knight born under the mark of the warrior. its sick. Do it =-}
you can be or do anything skill wise in the game, so choose for major skills the ones u think will use the most cause you will level faster.
the redguard is awesome for combat. thats the 1st one i picked and finished no problem.
Ya i started as a redguard...I loved it in the beginning, as you are able to carry a ton of stuff and in the beginning you get so much armor and weapons.
Now, I'm level 28 and I'm trying to force my redguard into magic training....its tedious, but it gives me something to do

Isn't hard to get a warrior type redguard into a magic user? How high is your intelligence/willpower?
Get the guide book. Read a little bit of it. Then play a couple hours to get the feel on how you level up. Then read the guide again look up on the net on how to maximize your stats. Then start over again with a new character.
Be an Imperial or a Redguard. I fought mostly with swords, although I started a new character and used magic. Either way you'll still have fun and do well. You can also change the difficulty of the game to make it harder or easier, so don't worry too much about making mistakes in what you choose. However, I strongly suggest not becoming a vampire in the game (this will be a choice later on in the game, not in the beginning). You might like it, but I'd save before you do just in case. Also, I suggest you create a save just before you exit the sewers in the beginning part of the game. That way, if you ever want to start a new character for fun, to try something new, or if you don't like your old character, you can just start a new one right away without having to go through the whole introduction thing again (unless you just want to). Anyway, don't worry too much about your choices in the beginning (about skills and races and stuff). Just remember to save before you do anything you are unsure of, just in case you don't like the result. I really hope you like Oblivion. To me, it's the best game I've ever played.
thanks everyone. cant wait to play

not too hard, my redguard is level 33 with 100 willpower and intelligence, levelling is the same.
also, dont listen to most of the people here TC, most of the times u dont want to level quickly, because your enemies get stronger as u get stronger. u want to make sure u get +5 for 3 attributes before u level otherwise you could find yourself outmatched pretty quick
I am also a redguard, I use all three classes. But I am best suited to be a warrior, but have pretty decent magic right now and stealth is getting there. I just power lvl my person so i get the max amount of stats every lvl I go up.
